LET'S DANCE

It's about girls. This list brings together the voices of artists who have accompanied me throughout my life. Voices of calm, of struggle, of resistance, of strength, of vigour, of poetry. Voices to dream, to imagine, to dance, to create. Voices to return to, again and again, to connect with life, with cinema, with rhythm. Because cinema is a gaze, but it is also rhythm, time, duration. 'Play it again.' Va de chicas. Y es que esta lista recoge las voces de artistas que me han acompañado a lo largo de la vida. Voces de remanso, de lucha, de resistencia, de fuerza, de vigor, de poesía. Voces para soñar, para imaginar, para bailar, para crear. Voces a las que volver, una y otra vez, para conectar con la vida, con el cine, con el ritmo. Porque el cine es mirada, pero también es ritmo, tiempo, duración. 'Play it again'.

To write I need to connect to my deepest feelings, and to connect to my deepest feelings I always go to music. The songs I choose depend on what kind of scene or sequence I'm writing. From classical music to jazz, from Latin rhythms to African songs, from flamenco to Catalan classics, from poetry in English to garage rock… I invite you to listen to this eclectic music list with the songs that I always revisit in order to get inspired. Para escribir necesito conectar con mis sentimientos más profundos, y para conectar con mis sentimientos más profundos siempre acudo a la música. Las canciones que elijo dependen del tipo de escena o secuencia que esté escribiendo. De la música clásica al jazz, de los ritmos latinos a las canciones africanas, del flamenco a los clásicos catalanes, de la poesía en inglés al garage rock... Te invito a escuchar esta ecléctica lista musical con las canciones que siempre revisito para inspirarme.

I make playlists all the time. I make them for writing notes, for digging into a new project, for Sunday afternoons or Monday mornings. I created this playlist to remind me of the very special year that I am living with my first feature film Lullaby (Cinco lobitos) produced by Encanta Films, Sayaka and Buenapinta Media. We premiered in Berlinale Panorama 2022 and the film just won the Malaga Film Festival. This time is not coming back and I wanted to capture these feelings of vertigo, gratitude and joy. As Amaia, the film protagonist played by Laia Costa, I´m learning to enjoy all about the first times. Hago playlists todo el tiempo. Las hago para escribir notas, para profundizar en un nuevo proyecto, para los domingos por la tarde o los lunes por la mañana. He creado esta playlist para recordar el año tan especial que estoy viviendo con mi primer largometraje Lullaby (Cinco lobitos) producido por Encanta Films, Sayaka y Buenapinta Media. Se estrenó en la Berlinale Panorama 2022 y la película acaba de ganar el Festival de Málaga. Este tiempo no va a volver y quería plasmar esas sensaciones de vértigo, gratitud y alegría. Como Amaia, la protagonista de la película interpretada por Laia Costa, estoy aprendiendo a disfrutar de las primeras veces.

This is the music I use to write or to draw. It is ambient, contemporary, minimalist music where electronic music meets tradition and folklore. A playlist of suggestive and abstract music that has been accompanying me for the last ten years and that I relate to important moments. I hope it suggests something to you too. Esta es la música que utilizo para escribir o para dibujar. Se trata de música ambient, contemporánea, minimalista en donde la electrónica se une a la tradición y al folklore. Una playlist de música sugerente y abstracta que me ha ido acompañando durante los últimos diez años y que relaciono con momentos importantes. Espero que a vosotros/as os sugiera algo también.

Songs built from loops: repetitions, additions, small changes and they end the same way they start. Chorus? I don't know what that is. Canciones construidas a partir de bucles: repeticiones, adiciones, pequeños cambios y acaban igual que empiezan. ¿Estribillo? No sé qué es eso.

No solo de cine y coproducciones se alimentan las personas. También de música. Mucha, mucha música; de todos los colores y de todos los sabores. ¡Ay! Y todos esos bailes que tanto hemos echado de menos durante el último par de años. Ahora que empezamos a recuperar el ritmo es hora de ponerse de nuevo a mover las caderas y a enloquecer con ritmos que hagan que empiece, de nuevo, a subir la temperatura a escala global.

We made the list together with Elena Martín and Marta Cruañas, in l'Escala, a summer town on the Costa Brava. We wanted to make a list that would set the mood for parties and summer nights, in the spirit of “Libertad” (the film we are presenting at Semaine de la Critique @Cannes2021), because after all, the two protagonists are two teenagers who, despite their differences, find each other through their desire to go out and explore. and experiment and why not, dance.

God! How do we miss the Ventana Sur “asaditooooo” (BBQ). Let’s get to it, we’ve been invited to put together some kind of playlist with great songs. This tracklist is the closest you can get to the roller coaster of emotions that we lived this year in our event (WEIRD Market). Keep in mind that we are an animation event, and that we and our audience are “very special”. Any physical activity beyond a click on the computer mouse is already considered in our field as DANCING. That is the reason why our utmost achievement is to spend several days having a blast and shaking it (spoiler alert: this is a bad joke). Don't tell anyone, but our parties are the most “animated”. Diossss como echamos de menos el asaditooooo de Ventana Sur. Bueno, al lío que nos han pedido que hagamos no se que de una lista de temazos. Esta tracklist es lo más parecido a la montaña rusa de emociones que vivimos en nuestro evento (WEIRD Market). Tened en cuenta que nos dedicamos a la animación y nosotros y nuestro público somos “especialitos”. Cualquier movimiento más allá del click del ratón lo consideramos BAILAR. Por eso nuestro mayor logro es estar durante varios días gozándola y moviendo el esqueleto (alerta spoiler: chiste malo). No se lo digáis a nadie pero nuestras fiestas son las más “animadas”.

Hi everybody! We wanted to share with you this special mix-tape that we present undercover as a playlist for all of you who have been working for weeks (and months) in the preparations for this edition of Ventana Sur market 2020. The idea is to hit shuffle, meaning there’s no particular order for the songs. It is important to feel alive, to be connected, even in a virtual mode. We felt the urge for this session of Latin Rock and indie music that mix some classics, above all for ull of us millennials (we are getting older), and a dose of the best of girl power. Just push play, enjoy the afterhours, feel the vibe, dance and sing along! ¡Hola a todo el mundo! Queríamos compartir este mix-tape encubierto en una playlist para todas y todos aquellos que lleváis trabajando semanas (y meses) en la organización de esta edición de Ventana Sur 2020. La idea es darle al shuffle y escucharla en orden aleatorio. Es importante sentirse vivos y estar conectados, aunque sea en lo virtual. Nos hacía falta esta sesión de rock e indie latino que mezcla algunos clásicos, sobre todo para los que somos millennials (nos hacemos mayores), con una selección del mejor girl power. Se trata de darle al play, disfrutar del afterhours y vibrar, bailar y cantar.

Dear friends from Marché du Film aux Cannes, I was sitting in a park having some ice-cream with two friends, enjoying small things in life and letting the breeze tickle our toes when I saw a message from our dearest Tito asking for a musical playlist for you to listen. The brainstorm immediately began and one and a half hour later I´ve managed to assemble a list that hopefully will make you feel as good as we are feeling right now laying on the grass talking about things we love despite all the terrible things that surrounds us these days. Hi there! How are you doing? I have chosen fifteen songs for you… It was a big challenge to pick only fifteen because I like music very much. The truth is that, despite wearing glasses and having a ‘reader’s’ face… I do read, but above all I listen to music. I really enjoy it. I think music has the incredible power of - in only three or four minutes - transporting you to a certain place, and at the same time to tell you a story. And even when I don’t use music as part of the creative process for my characters, for me it is very… very important. I hope you enjoy the playlist, I would have made it longer, but it is what it is… Big hug! Enjoy the music! David

The songs I’ve chosen for this playlists come from the last one I put together to prepare my character Matt in the series ‘The Innocent’ (Netflix), and that I still use since it is an ongoing project. I select songs for each role I have to prepare, for each project. It helps me to create and atmosphere that allows me to enter the character in an easier and more sensitive way. I hope you like it!
